Taxonomist III Contract

6-month contract w/ possible contract extension and/or FTE conversion
$65-75 / hour

Our goal is to explore, innovate, and design novel interfaces and hardware for the next generation of virtual, augmented, and mixed reality experiences. We are driving research towards a vision of an always-on AR device that can provide contextually relevant assistance across a range of complex, dynamic, real-world tasks in natural environments. To this end, we are seeking a person who will focus on the strategic planning, design, and implementation of taxonomies to support the categorization and labeling of users’ psychological context for use in experimental design and machine learning.

The main focus of this role involves developing, maintaining, and expanding a taxonomy for use in the diverse landscape of potential AR applications, while integrating it into our broader taxonomy/ontology infrastructure. The responsibilities also include following best practices for taxonomy management, adhering to metadata and vocabulary standards, and building cross-functional relationships. This position will primarily concentrate on extending our Taxonomy to work with future AR systems, providing an exceptional opportunity to help AR systems engineers identify needs for operating systems and shell functionality, as well as assisting content creators in identifying applications that will enhance users’ lives.

Responsibilities:

• Formulate a strategy to extend our taxonomy and ontology to proposed AR use cases and shell design.
• Lead collaborations with UX, PM, Eng, AI, design, research, and data science teams.
• Apply industry best practices for taxonomy development and maintenance.
• Contribute to building and establishing a taxonomy program for goal-oriented AR applications.
• Conduct in-depth analyses of product or experiment use cases to determine knowledge modeling requirements for supporting those experiences.
• Provide recommendations regarding ongoing taxonomy management, product strategies, and features that depend on taxonomy.

Requirements:

• Experience leading design changes for extending taxonomies to new domains.
• 5+ years of experience in developing taxonomies/or ontologies to support a variety of systems both for front-end and back-end use.
• Experience with developing complex taxonomies, thesauri, and ontologies.
• Experience with evaluating and implementing taxonomies to support systems such as search systems and development of ML classification algorithms
• Experience with a variety of topic/domain types and complexity of taxonomies.
• Highly experienced communicating and presenting taxonomy principles and standards.
• Strong ownership and ability to self-start, build relationships with partners, and develop a point of view in an ambiguous domain
• Strong ability to proactively communicate about projects and workstreams

Preferred Qualifications
-Master’s Degree in Library Science, Information Management or Linguistics
-Experience with scripting language such as Python and/SQL
