Negotiating salary may seem like a difficult task…That is if you are not prepared. Here are a few tips to help get you prepared to negotiate a salary that both you and the employer are happy with.
Use Glassdoor
Glassdoor is a great platform to use to get an idea of comparable salaries for the position you are interviewing for. Check out the same desired position with other companies and see the salary range that the position falls in. It is important to be aware of what the market salary range is, so you can be realistic with the requested salary.
Ask a Recruiter
If you use a recruiting firm like Russell Tobin, you will have insight into the potential salary and what the market rate is. Develop a salary range in your mind with the information you gathered.
Develop a Salary Rage
The range disparity will vary based on your level but make sure the range is realistic —around 20% difference from low to high. The bottom end of the range should be the average salary for the intended position and the high-end of the range should be your hopeful amount. Hope for the best but be prepared to compromise.
Share your Research
Based on the research that you’ve completed and the experience that you have, present your information in a manner that is effective. Write down bullet points of salary ranges that you have found in your area, your target salary, the lowest you are willing to go and the experience that you have. Use these bullet points when negotiating your salary.
Don’t be Afraid to Negotiate
It can be intimidating to negotiate a salary, but don’t be afraid to counter an offer. A company will most likely not rescind an offer if you choose to negotiate (especially if they like you). The worst that they can say is ‘no’ – but you don’t know until you try!
